The feature that makes stables such a tremendous threat to a horse's physical and emotional health is the door.
Doors can be improved by removing them from their hinges and properly disposing of them.
If the door is entirely removed a stable changes from being a health hazard to being a merely superfluous indication of the barn owner's need to bow to conformity.

Best setup I have seen for a couple of horses at home is a three side shelter faced away from the prevailing weather..built stout. The best thing about it is that some horses tend to want to evacuate their bowels inside..thus providing you with a nice and convenient collection point for prestarted compost. The horses won't spend much time there though. One thing that is great about big barns, it is a great place to store hay and keep it dry..or a really great place to keep the owls and hawks off fowl. Darned nice place to park a tractor, too..which is awfully handy for moving bales. But then..if you move bales that way, you'd have to go to the gym to work out..lollerskates. Never ending circle.
Skip the gym, stack your hay and go ride..better for you and the horse..besides, they get mad if you park a horse at the gym. That is discrimination right there. -Lloyd
